Farming and Keeping the Rainforest

Posted by Claudette Fleming about 12 years ago

Traditional Cassava Farming keeps the Rainforest. This video helps to explain how.

Indigenous peoples of South America have used the lowlands for farming for centuries. Cassava farming has always been done and the forests have survived. Hopefully this small scale farming would continue to preserve these valuable lowlands.

Evelyn Bishop : Claudette, Cassava is an important crop here in Panama. On my farm, we have planted over 500 plants, and they are all doing their part in the permaculture eco-system here. We didn't burn the surrounding land, but I've seen farmers here do that. Instead, we planted into existing pasture land. Good luck! Lyn
