Lakabe, Spain, Reinhabiting abandoned villages

Posted by Richard Perkins almost 12 years ago

www.impermanencefilm.org

Heading into the north of Spain, scooting around the Pyrenees, we headed for Lakabe.  This abandoned village was reinhabited by a community a generation ago and has become a model for utilizing the existing resource bases of abandoned villages in the area left when the dominant regime in the 70s made it too difficult for residents to eek out their existence in the mountains.

We were not permitted to film at Lakabe, which works on consensus and some of the residents have had aversion to feeling like a bit of a zoo in the past.  We did take some photos avoiding the residents for reference, which you can see below.

Sarah Baleiza : Beautiful old buildings, looks really well established. Was just thinking last week about the potential in Europe to work with existing village infrastructure and traditional values as the younger generation regains interest in this way of life.
