Beginning stages of work at the homestead.

Posted by Dustin Cooper almost 11 years ago

I am in the early stages of work on my permaculture design. Some trees are planted and my garden beds have begun.

I have begun planting trees and have started a couple garden beds for this spring.  I purchased the property in the fall of 2012 and it has some great features.  The pond is a great feature to start with.  The pond was down due to the drought we had in the summer, however we have been blessed with so much snow and rainfall that it filled quickly and I have been able to observe the water-shed on the property.  I have also seen how much water catchment the neighboring properties give for hydration of my property.  After digging in several areas, I have found good top soil in some areas and others have a thin layer with lots of clay beneath.  The area is known for the clay in the soil which helps the pond retain water incredibly well.  I dug a trench and filled with a woody core on contour on the south side of my house.  It recieves a fair amount of catchment and is high enough that I can put another contour bed below it.  I will try and get more pictures of progress and what I am doing.  I have planted lots of trees and I'm in the process of cutting some dead trees and pruning at the back of my property.

Dustin Cooper : The first image is the woody bed on contour. The second image is the property this fall shortly after I purchased the property. Yes, I have been mowing around 2/3 of the property right now. Once I can get my plans further along I will have some dirt work done.
