August update

Project: Chicagoland Permaculture at Townline Design

Posted by Daniel Brown over 10 years ago

Culinary mushroom inoculation, a bad drought, and many many markets.

We picked up our first two refridgerators to store some of our veggies for market.  There was a small problem with fruit flies, but we've addressed it.  I've had to keep our pond fed with well water to keep it from drying up again.  A new radial tower sprinkler is helping us stay on top of watering.  The beans got to be a bit too heavy for some of the corn in our three sisters beds, so we'll use less next time.  We're currently harvesting tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, kale, swiss chard, green beans, zucchini, crookneck squash, green peppers, and cucumbers.  I set up a stand at two markets on Fridays, and a third on Saturday.  Only one seems to be very promising at the moment.  We have fall crop seeds that are ready to be planted, and our cardboard/woodchip mulching is moving right along.  The wood for the hugelkultur blueberry mound is finally buried, so we have a place to transplant our blueberry bushes to now.

Aside from that, I got our website up and running, and someone is designing a logo for us as we speak.  The business will be named Townline Organic Farm.  Cards and a banner will follow as soon as the logo is finished.

Much of my time this month has been devoted to drilling ash logs and plugging them up with mycellium spawn of Blue Oyster, Lion's mane, and Shitake mushrooms.  Hopefully we can expand to sell delicious and medicinal fungus in the spring.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
