feeding chicken with maggots

Posted by Juliet Pope about 10 years ago

first trial - ended up composting the rabbits so a bit much mulch under the bunnies I think - will have another go

Found a couple of squashed bunnies on the road and set up my first two maggot feeder trials. The theory is that the maggots wants to get away from the decomposing bunny and so drop down through holes made in the bottom of a suspended bucket that contains the bunny plus a bit of mulch above and below to act as biofilters. I waited for a few weeks but nothing much happened so tipped out the contents to investigate. I had made some lovely compost - so process had gone a bit far and maggots didn't seem to drop out. Will try again with a bit less mulch under the roadkill and see how it goes. Smell was very minimal so concept is promising.
