Project: Molokai Permaculture Education Initiative - PRI USA & Sust`aina ble Molokai Partnership

See film presentation made by Maui Tauotaha of `Oiwi TV highlighting Geoff & Nadia Lawton's Earthworks course on Molokai as they share knowledge with us on strategies to reduce erosion and runoff from the mountains into the sea, and restore watershed

The youtube video link below is of the Earthworks Course, the last class in our training series that took place in December 2010 with Geoff & Nadia Lawton.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMNRsLqjtdM

Geoff and Nadia were very gracious in sharing their knowledge with us.  We are so grateful to them and the work they do to bring light and inspiration to so many around the globe.  What brought tears to my eyes and hope burning in my heart were the many examples around the world of lands so denuded and arid, extreme deserts made green and renewed by the steadfast dedication of those who care and live the ethics of aloha `aina and  malama `aina, loving and caring for the land.

In the short week they were here, Geoff, Nadia, and baby Latifa trekked all over Molokai in the early hours of each morning before the start of class.  They saw our fishponds, mountains, and lo`i kalo (taro patches).  As they surveyed the island, they made recommendations along the way, revealing clues in the landscape from a permaculture perspective and bringing to us an even greater appreciation for the wisdom of our kupuna (ancestors) who managed the land by ahupua`a (valleys from mountain to sea) and moku (districts) designed at a massive scale to be sustainable and abundant with all the food and resources needed by all who dwelled there.  Geoff told us that our ahupua`a system (referred to by Bill Mollison as the `ohana system) was one of the 6 known sustainable systems in the world and that its something that he teaches to hundreds of students each year.  I am reminded of an `olelo no`eau (Hawaiian saying), "I ka wa ma mua, ka wa ma hope" -- our future can be found in the wisdom of the past.  Throughout the permaculture trainings, I did feel my cells awakening with a certainty that I have always known this, that the knowledge is present in my DNA and ancestral memory.  Geoff explained it is the same for all who learn permaculture, it is a remembering and an awakening to what we have always known.

Mahalo (thanks) to the Lawtons for their inspirational work.  Mahalo to Andrew & Shenaqua Jones who planted the seed of this knowledge and made it pa`a (firm) within us.  To perma-genius Hunter Heaivilin; Nichole Ross for working with us to bring the Molokai Permaculture Education Initiative to our island; Brian Splatt for his major skills in "splatt-benedicts", herb spirals, and berkeleys; and Jill "Polish Thunder" Ross for being our permasister and newest Molokaian keeping us motivated and organized.  Mahalo also to DarLynne Ka`ahanui and her staff of counselors who hosted the training at their Alu Like Ho`ala Hou site in Mahana, Molokai.  A very special thanks goes out to Maui Tauotaha and `Oiwi TV who filmed the course and put together this wonderful 14-minute film that will assist us in cultivating additional partnerships for the healing of our island.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
