Bhumi Agroforestry LLC

Posted by Neal Campbell about 13 years ago

Bhumi Agroforestry LLC is a commercial polycrop agroforest, on the big island of Hawaii. Cacao is the main crop and it will financially support the educational demonstration of permaculture in commercial agriculture.

Aloha!

I am Neal and I have 31 acres of farmland in a perfect location for cacao. The site's elevation ranges from 420' to 650', and averages 200" of rain annually.

I am involved in the Hawaii cacao industry being a one-man-show managing approx 8 acres of cacao orchard for my supervisor Tom, whom supplies award-winning cacao beans to chocolatiers and himself makes some of the best chocolate I have ever tasted! (I have tried a lot of chocolate!) Yes, I am an hourly employee of a farm company that produces cacao in the Hilo area, but I actually came to the big island to do this, to grow cacao, and grow it in a regenerative permaculture agroforest setting. So, I've acquired the land and registered the company as first steps toward this goal.

My life's dream, since a wee lad, has been to cultivate cacao and make chocolate, so that nobody would ever again tell me how much chocolate I can eat!

Bhumi Agroforestry is my own company born of my dedication to the land, my ecology-before-profits motive. From my experience, profits follow ecologically-responsible land management decisions.Irresponsible decisions lead to infertilization, which demends costly "fertil"izer that kills off living soil communities that would otherwise provide natural soil fertility. But you already know that!

Therefore, Bhumi will stand as a functional example of commercial permaculture, to demonstrate that we can make a living and provide jobs, and even promote responsible labor ethics etc while repairing the land, instead of profitting by destroting it!

Mahalos!
