The Yoga Forest

Project Type

Residential, Community, Demonstration, Educational

Project Summary

The Yoga Forest is a Green Living and Tranformational Learning Center - A space dedicated to uniting the principles of Permaculture and the philosophies of Yoga. It is an experiment in self-reliant homesteading, green living and yogic practices.

Project Description

The Yoga Forest was founded as a sustainable living experiment, through a desire for living simply, greenly and in communion with everything surrounding us. Offering daily yoga classes, Permaculture workshops, monthly internships following the Lunar cycle, Independent Study Programs and an annual Permaculture Design Course. For more information see our website www.theyogaforest.org.

As we step into deep ecology and recognize ourselves as part of the ecosystems and world that we breathe, we begin to recognize the impacts we make. In Permaculture the idea that everything gardens means that everything we have in place is cultivating the whole. Therefore it is imperative to take time and recognize the impacts of all the plants, buildings, elements, animals, and insects on the whole of our Permaculture space. We are always dealing with ecosystems, whether it is in the personal body, the garden, home, or community. Everything we do with our personal bodies impacts the world around us. It may be subtle, and perhaps we may never notice, but regardless our thoughts affecting our actions affecting our world make us part of what gardens life in this world. In Yoga, a personal practice extends far beyond a quiet mind. It extends to where your attention goes. It increases your ability to respond as you become more aware. Through Permaculture, we unite the response to and awareness of our environment into a fusion of deep green yoga.

At The Yoga Forest, we want to live true to our ideals and honest with ourselves. For us, this means daily yoga, meditation and selfless service (seva or karma yoga) within the community and building a sustainable, comfortable, peaceful place conducive to growth, education and sharing. To live in a healthy, balanced, natural manner is a way to make positive change for ourselves and for the ecosystems in which we live.

We aim to help grow and inspire deep green yogis and yoginis – people dedicated to viewing the environment and their relationship to it in a sustainable manner. We are dedicated to growing our food organically and understanding the organic nature of our relationships to our food, our environment and the people within it. We hope to inspire and connect you to a seed to plate philosophy, and help give you practical skills and resources in order to move towards greater sustainability.

The Yoga Forest has been built using various natural and traditional building methods. We use solar energy for simple electricity and hot water, natural grey water filtering systems for our kitchen and outdoor shower. We cook outdoors with a beautiful rocket stove and barrel oven installation using coppiced woods from the property. We blend our beans and smoothies using a bicycle blender with much joy. We try our best to produce as little waste as possible and continue to explore new endeavors to create a more sustainable community.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
