Project Summary

La Ferme de Sourrou is a site developed over 25 years, managed by two people who have incorporated permaculture principles into land management, animal husbandry, production methods and food and energy autonomy.

Project Description

The farm is registered with the MSA (Mutualité sociale agricole) and our principal income is from the sale of Mohair products from our Angora goats and from the sale of lamb from our herd of sheep. We believe that as well as being capable of producing for our own needs, it is important to produce a surplus and contribute to the health and well-being of our farmer neighbours. In the farm of 38 hectares we have built a passive solar house which is autonomous in its energy requirements. We keep chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys and pigs and have several potagers, a food forest, food storage cellars, and use a wide variety of systems to produce all of our food and ensure that the surplus is preserved and stored correctly. We use our home and gardens to show and teach permaculture principles and practices to hundreds of visitors each year. Since building the house, we have concentrated on developing the site around it, learning from our mistakes, experiences and achievements - sharing them with schools, colleges, associations and the individuals who have passed through our life over the years. I have kept a visual record of most of our projects, thousands of our photos and articles are available on line, in blogs and the forums I administrate using the pseudonym "hardworkinghippy"

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
